Accessible Archives Scenes from the Life of Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was to born slave parents in 1820. In 1849, she escaped from her owners, and made it to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she became a leading abolitionist and used the Underground Railroad to bring more than 70 slaves to freedom. During the Civil War, she worked as a cook, nurse and spy, and in the post-war era struggled for women’s suffrage. She died in 1913 in Auburn, New York.
